THE HUNGER GAMES

The Hunger Games
Suzanne Collins
Scholastic press, 2008

Katniss Everdeen is a fairly average teenage girl, except for the fact that she lives in futuristic dystopia Panem, run by a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve Districts. At one point, about 75 years ago, the then thirteen Districts rebelled against the Capitol. The all-powerful Capitol triumphed, decimating District 13 as it did. Now, to remind the districts of their superiority, the Capitol demands that every year 24 teenagers- a boy and a girl from each District - to participate in The Hunger Games, a barbaric fight to the death. The winner and their District are showered with food, prizes and glory. Every moment is televised and required viewing for all of Panem.
When Katniss' little sister Primrose's name is drawn as the girl tribute for district 12, Katniss volunteers to take her place. Be ready to laugh, cry, and cheer on one of the most likeable cast of characters I've ever met in this suspenseful tale of love, loss and what it takes to be a champion.
